Camera Obscura
Firstly I took a piece of cardboard and stuck it together to form a box. Next I cut a small square on the top of the box so that you could see through to the inside. Then I sliced off one side of it so that it was now open and attached tracing paper to it with masking tape.
Then I rolled up a piece of paper to cut it down to the right size and stick it together. After that I attached the tube of paper to the small square I had cut earlier so you can now see into the box. The next thing I did was to stick the lens onto the front of the tube of paper so it looked like the lens of a camera.
Now my box was ready to draw on so I exposed it to the outside light near the window, propped up on a stool. The outside image was now projected upside down onto the tracing paper so I began tracing it with a black pen. I found it quite hard to draw on the tracing paper since I wasn't leaning on anything.

WWW- I think the overall construction of the box was quite neat and smooth
EBI- The lens could have been taped on better and I could've drawn the image a bit neater but overall I think it went well and looked like the example camera obscuras.

The History of Photography
SLR Camera
The SLR camera is a single lens-reflex camera that typically uses a mirror and prism system which permits the photographer to view through the lens and see exactly what is being captured. This just helps the image to be clearer and more precise, also so that it helps the photographer to take the right picture the was they want it to be.
Composition
The term 'composition' means 'putting together' which is essentially what we did in this task. We were given a composition of images to recreate in our own photography, interpreting them in any way we wanted. I enjoyed this task as it let us be creative using different shapes, colours and textures to construct our images.
WWW- I think I used a good variety of colours, textures and shapes to produce my images
EBI- The images could be more precise and neatly photographed
Rule Of Third
|
WWW- I used a range of objects and people and placed them in the correct place of the rule of thirds grid
EBI- Take more precise images which are clearer and better focused overall |
Shutter Speed
Shutter speed or exposure time is the length of time that the film or digital sensor inside the camera is exposed to light when taking a photograph. Shutter speed is measured in fractions of a second: 1/30, 1/60, 1/100/ 1/125. To achieve a sharp, clear image (which really captures the moment) you would set your shutter speed to a high setting like 1/840. Similarly, if you want a blurred, hazy image you would want your shutter speed on a lower setting like 1/80.
Levitation- Natsumi Hayashi
Natsumi Hayashi (also known as Yowa Yowa) is a Japanese photographer who lives in Tokyo. She became an internet sensation over her work of levitation photography and inspires many to create their own pieces similar to hers. She was born in 1982, in Tokyo, and has been a photographer since 2010 when she made her first levitation series in the autumn. Her images are so well created because of the normality of the setting they're taken in. She'll take a normal area, like the park or outside a shop, and jump into very casual poses to capture herself in a normal act, just in mid-air.
Fast Shutter Speed- First Response |
|
All of these images were taken using 1/800 exposure. The aim of them is to capture something, in mid air, to make it seem like it's levitating. I think I completed this quite well, however some of the images do appear as jumping so if I was to do it again I would definitely make sure the models feel were flat and appeared levitating instead of jumping. I used a range of different poses and backgrounds which gave the images some differentiation.
WWW: I think my angles and lighting were accurate EBI: Take clearer/more photos |
Second ResponseSlow Shutter Speed- First ResponseWWW- My images were a good amount blurred and the shutter speed was at the right setting EBI- Take a range of different photos in different poses and positions Second Response
|
I think my second response was much better than the first. The models appeared levitating instead of jumping this time and I got different angles and heights including full body, just legs and side views. In these pictures the shutter speed was 1/100th of a second, therefore making the people moving blurry. If I did this again I would make sure to hold the camera still, making the images clearer and better overall. I think my second response was improved from my first because the pictures turned out clearer and more explicit making the images look neater and accurate. |
Francesca Woodman
Francesca Stern Woodman was an American photographer best known for her black and white pictures featuring either herself or female models. Many of her photographs show women, naked or clothed, blurred, merging with their surroundings, or whose faces are obscured.
Depth of field
For many cameras, depth of field is the distance between the nearest and the farthest objects that are in acceptably sharp focus in an image. The depth of field can be calculated based on focal length, distance to subject, the acceptable circle of confusion size, and aperture.
Aperture
In optics, an aperture is a hole or an opening through which light travels. More specifically, the aperture and focal length of an optical system determine the cone angle of a bundle of rays that come to a focus in the image plane. An optical system typically has many openings or structures that limit the ray bundles.

Photoshop
Recently we have learning how to use photoshop and understanding the way it works. I have used a photo taken at slow shutter speed to demonstrate what to do.

Andy Warhol style portraits
I used a portrait image I took in front of a white background to edit in the style of Andy Warhol. I used a range of different filters, colours and textures to convey Andy Warhol's style.
WWW: I took then used a good basic image which let me demonstrate the Andy Warhol style
EBI: Experiment with different colour palletts

Black and white photos
In this task I learnt how to make part of a coloured image black and white.
Layering a portrait
In this task I learnt how to layer a photo over another. I used an image of a beach as the background and an image of a boy as the overlapping picture.
WWW- I did all of the steps right and got an almost accurate outcome
EBI-Make the edges which I erased off the images neater

GIFS
In this task we took a number of photos one after the other, moving a small step/direction every time. I used the website 'gifmaker.me' to put together the video.
Romain Laurent
Romain Laurent is a French photographer and director who studied product design at the National School of Applied Arts in Paris before discovering that was his way to make people see his strange ideas. Since then he's been working in advertisement and several personal projects, including his amazing series of GIFS.
First Response
WWW- I took clear pictures in each different space moving forward/around.
EBI- I should increase the speed on the first two gifs since they appear a little too slow and should be faster overall.

Light Painting
A ‘light painting’ is an image that is created by capturing a long exposure of a dark scene that contains a moving light source. By moving the light source within the scene whilst the photographic medium is being exposed the photographer is able to produce an effect which resembles the brush strokes made by an artist’s paint brush, only composed entirely of light. A classic example of a light painting is writing your name using a sparkler at a firework display. Light Paintings can be created by capturing any moving subject with a light source against a dark background using a long exposure.
Michael Bosanko
Michael Bosanko has been capturing light since 2004. He discovered light painting on accident, Michael says this of his moment of discovery, “the moon formed part of the scene, but the camera shake caused the moon to make a streak...'

Light painting- homework
The presentation of your weebly is excellent and demonstrates an excellent understanding of composition and layout. Please continue to present all the images as the main focal point in each section ,also make sure to label your images in the aperture section with the apertures they were shot with.
Your work demonstrates your strong good of photographic technique. Your photoshop work is good and shows a developing understanding of photoshop technique your giff work is particularly strong and shows an interesting range of set ups. I particularly like the light painting giffs they work really well.
Double check all of your explanations to ensure that you explain tasks and processes thoroughly. You also need to expand your analysis of the artists going more in depth about their visual practice and how it relates to your work.
Continue to experiment and practice the techniques introduced during foundation. Make sure to persevere with tasks until you get the required outcome.
